What the money actually buys
- Home: one-to-one attention, familiar surroundings, control over routine — but no social life, and the house itself may no longer be safe
- Assisted living: 24-hour presence, meals, activities, other people — but less privacy, less one-to-one time, and a move
The factors nobody quantifies
- Does the home need modifications, and who pays?
- Can the family caregiver keep going — and what happens when they cannot?
- Rural area? Home care agencies may be thin, which changes the price and reliability
- Is the person themselves being asked? Their preference carries weight
A way through it
